Welcome to Little Sophia

"Receive the children in reverence, educate them in love, and send them forth in freedom." — Rudolf Steiner

ndent, not-for-profit Steiner/Little Sophia is an indepeWaldorf kindergarten nestled in the heart of Abbotsford, Melbourne. For more than three decades, we have been a cherished part of Melbourne’s Steiner community, offering a nurturing and holistic approach to early childhood education that honours the wonder, dignity and uniqueness of every child.

Our work follows the educational philosophy of Rudolf Steiner, the Austrian philosopher and scientist whose insights into the nature and development of the human being form the foundation of Steiner education. Steiner advocated a holistic approach to early childhood that nurtures the physical, emotional, intellectual, social and spiritual development of the child. We honour the individuality of each child, supporting the healthy development of their will, imagination and emerging thinking through rhythm, play, movement, meaningful work and loving relationships. These early experiences provide the foundation for lifelong learning, resilience and wellbeing.

Our rhythmically structured, play-based curriculum unfolds in warm, homelike environments where beauty, creativity and connection with nature are woven into each day. Guided by the changing seasons, children are immersed in storytelling, song, artistic experiences, practical activities and outdoor exploration, fostering a deep sense of belonging, wonder and care for the world around them.

Little Sophia offers Home Kindergarten and Nature Kindergarten programs within a long day care setting for children aged 3 to 6 years, together with a Parent & Child Playgroup for families with children from birth to 3.5 years. Open from 8.30 am to 4.30 pm, our kindergarten provides flexible care with high staff-to-child ratios, funded 3- and 4-year-old kindergarten, and a vibrant community where every child is known, valued and supported to flourish in their own unique way.

Our Philosphy

Statement of Philosophy

“Our highest endeavor must be to develop free human beings who are able, out of themselves, to impart purpose and meaning to their lives.”
— Rudolf Steiner

The values and beliefs living and expressed in our kindergarten program arise from our shared understanding of the human being and the development of the child as described by the philosopher Rudolf Steiner.

The central purpose of Steiner education is to support and educate children so that their own innate and unique human qualities may come to greater fulfillment. We believe that in the child’s early years foundations are laid for later learning and healthy development, including lifelong physical, social, emotional, intellectual, ethical and spiritual growth.

We see kindergarten as a place where children are gently supported as their world expands, opening into relationships with others, the wider community and the world around them. Our kindergarten provides a nurturing, secure environment where reverence for life, warmth, and care for the self, for each other and for the environment are practised.

We recognise the importance of both the individual child and the group, seeking a healthy balance between individual needs and the needs of the group. We value the group as an important social realm in which children experience belonging, relationship, responsibility and their place within a community.

Our program reflects our belief that play is the essential activity for young children. Play is the young child’s work, the means by which they best learn and construct new knowledge. Through play, children digest and understand their experiences, practise and refine skills, and develop their ability to manage their own behaviour in ways that are meaningful and enjoyable to them.

‘If a young child has been able in his play … to give up his whole being to the world around him … he will be able in the serious tasks of later life, to devote himself with confidence and power to the service of the world’

– Rudolf Steiner

Our program provides opportunities for uninterrupted imaginative play with natural, open-ended materials, alongside purposeful domestic work, artistic experiences, time in nature and experiences within the wider community.

We believe that young children learn profoundly through their senses, movement, imagination, relationships and participation in meaningful activity. We therefore seek to create an environment that supports the healthy development of the physical body, encourages appropriate exploration of risk, and nurtures resilience and warm, respectful relationships.

Mixed-age groups provide opportunities for children to learn from one another through natural relationships and an apprenticeship system of learning. Older children have opportunities to develop confidence and responsibility, while younger children have older children to observe and learn from.

We believe that during the first seven years children learn best through imitation and example rather than direct instruction. The adults in the kindergarten therefore have an important responsibility to create an environment worthy of imitation through meaningful work, respectful relationships and care for the world around us.

We recognise that this work also calls for the ongoing inner development of the adult, through an awareness of our thoughts, feelings and attitudes, and a commitment to reflection, growth and reverence for life in our work with children and one another.

A rhythmical program helps support the young child to find a balance between form and freedom. Predictable rhythms throughout the kindergarten day, week and year provide security, foster autonomy and convey a sense of life’s interrelationships and wholeness.

We value the natural world and the beauty and harmony of the kindergarten environment. Natural materials, seasonal experiences, gardening, cooking, music, stories, movement and practical work are woven into the life of the kindergarten.

Our kindergarten is situated on the Country of the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people of the Kulin Nation, the Traditional Custodians of this land. We are committed to learning from the knowledge and wisdom of the Wurundjeri people, and from their deep and enduring care for Country, in a spirit of humility, reciprocity and respect. We hope that children come to know this place as a living community of land, waters, plants, animals and people, and that they grow in their sense of belonging to it and responsibility for it.

Time outdoors and connection with the natural world are woven through our days and seasons, expressed in different ways across our programs. Children have opportunities to play and explore among trees, soil, stones, water, sticks and leaves, where they can run, climb, dig, build and imagine freely. Some of our programs spend extended periods learning and playing in outdoor environments beyond the kindergarten grounds, while others have their home within the kindergarten and its immediate outdoor spaces. Across all of our programs, we seek to nurture children’s familiarity with the natural world and the changing seasons, and to awaken the wonder and reverence for nature that lie at the heart of Steiner education.

We also recognise the importance of strong relationships between home, kindergarten and the wider community. We strive to work collaboratively with families in the care and education of their children and to contribute to a diverse and accepting community.

“Children who live in an atmosphere of warmth and love and who have around them really good examples for imitation are living in their right element.”

— Rudolf Steiner

At the heart of the Kinder is a commitment to kindness, compassion, and care, that we’ve been deeply moved by. We have witnessed how the teachers guide the children with curiosity, listening, and compassion-centred leadership. They actively foster self-trust, self-efficacy, expression, empathy, and connectedness, and we’ve seen our child blossom under their care. The Kinder’s connection to nature and the seasons is also profound and meaningful - in both the “home” and “farm” kinder programmes. I wholeheartedly recommend this gorgeous Kinder.

We love the rhythm of the Steiner school day and the way learning is woven through story, movement, nature, music and handwork. Our child comes home curious, settled and eager to share what she has made and discovered. The thoughtful, unhurried approach to technology in the early years has allowed her imagination to bloom, and she plays and creates with a depth of focus we rarely see elsewhere.

Little Sophia Kindergarten is such a special place for children to learn, play and feel a true sense of community. Every day my daughter is greeted with such warmth, it’s clear how deeply the teachers care for the children. My child talks about her teachers as though they’re her family members. She is always so excited to arrive at kinder to share her stories with her friends and teachers. As a parent, it’s such a comfort to know she is in a place where she feels safe and cared for. The classrooms are beautiful, full of joy, love and handmade crafts and toys. We love the gentle daily rhythm, the seasonal festivals, calming indoor spaces and beautiful outdoor area (with two sandpits, climbing frames, a garden and chickens!). The children are given the opportunity to learn life long skills, and participate in activities such as cooking, gardening, and are taught to treat not only each other but their environment with respect. I am incredibly grateful for the Little Sophia community and highly recommend LSK to any prospective parents.

We have had the absolute pleasure and joy of sending both of our daughters to Little Sophia Kindergarten. For a kindergarten in bustling inner city Melbourne, the atmosphere is world’s away from the busy day to day. It is evident that all staff and educators take incredible pride in their role in nurturing and caring for all the children. Their effort to create connection is so comforting as a parent to watch every day. Our children have grown so much as little humans in their time at Little Sophia and their ability to imagine the world in such a free and magical way is highly attributable to their days at the kindergarten. We couldn’t recommend it more as the most beautiful introduction to education for little ones.

Little Sophia Kindergarten surpassed all our expectations for our child. The kinder embodied everything that you would expect from a Steiner education. We wanted our child to continue to exist in a dreamy, imaginative consciousness with no pressures and she certainly did. Her love of play and imagination was nurtured with love and kindness by her beautiful teachers Catherine and Ali. Our child flourished while at Little Sophia.

Little Sophia has been a wonderful kindergarten experience for our daughter beyond words. Our daughter had attended another service the previous year and it had been too overwhelming for her, however when we started at Little Sophia it was a completely different experience. The predictable rhythms, the kind and caring educators and the generally calm and beautiful environment all made a world of difference. The atmosphere is calm, friendly and welcoming and every day I am amazed to see how my daughter has developed and thrived in this environment and now walks straight into the room with a big smile on her face, so looking forward to her day ahead. The program included bread making, learning beautiful songs and rhymes in morning circle, imaginative play and vivid storytelling. As well as delightful seasonal festivals. Little Sophia opened us up to the world of Steiner pedagogy which is evidently perfect for our child and we are so grateful to have discovered that. Most meaningful to us is seeing that our daughter has developed her social skills and formed real friendships with the support and scaffolding Little Sophia has provided. The kindergarten itself has a calm atmosphere both inside in their sweet pink-hued tidy rooms and outside in the lovely garden, complete with chickens, sandpit and wooden playground. We are so grateful to have found this kindergarten and its community and highly recommend it.

We chose Little Sophia Kindergarten because we knew that their Steiner approach to early education would provide a nurturing, well-informed, and safe space for our little one to connect, learn, and experience the world beyond their family. Little Sophia Kindergarten met and exceeded all of our expectations. During the three years we have attended (playgroup to kinder), we have always found a calm, wondrous, and grounding learning space that nurtures childhood, children, and families. The teachers and educators have offered our little one the gift of belonging, the magic of positive relationships, and a sense of connection to the Land and the world around them. The admin staff have kindly guided and supported our family through this journey. The learning days at Little Sophia are held with intention, curiosity, and a rhythm that gently allows children to find themselves as individuals as well as active members of their community. The program, routine, and rituals are beautifully crafted to create these learning opportunities. Our little one has blossomed in this lovingly contained and curated pedagogical space. The Nature and Farm kindergarten programs have been an wonderfully expansive experience as well. We are grateful for what this kindergarten and community have given us, and will always cherish the wisdom, knowledge, and passion of the wonderful women who make this place a reality.

Little Sophia is a fabulous kindergarten that provides an amazingly calm and nurturing environment for children. The nature program is amazing, allowing children to be outside all day, either in the bush by the Yarra or at Collingwood Children's Farm. While the Steiner approach is not for everyone, you certainly don't need to be a devotee to benefit from this delightful kinder.

A beautiful, warm and nurturing kindergarten. The gentle rhythms support the children to grow and develop in their own time, while the connection to nature and imaginative play create a space where they can explore, feel connected and held. We’re incredibly grateful for the warmth, thoughtfulness and deep care the educators bring to the children. The sense of community they foster is is wonderful and so important. I couldn’t recommend this beautiful kindergarten more highly. A truly special place.

We’ve spent two and a half amazing years at Little Sophia Kinder, and it’s hard to put into words how much it has meant to our family. The educators have been far more than teachers to our daughter. They’ve been steady, loving people in her life - truely invested in her experience and development and she has formed deep, trusting bonds with them, which is so special. We’ve loved the Steiner approach, too. The daily rhythm, the time spent outdoors (with chickens!), the seasonal festivals and the beautiful indoor space has been such a great environment for my daughter to learn and grow. Beyond the kinder itself, we’ve found a real community here and I would encourage anyone looking for a warm, nurturing, community minded and very well administered/ organised early education program for their kids to consider Little Sophia.
